Know Before You Go

Know Before You Go

What to expect after your first wax:

After your first wax, the area will be red and slightly sensitive. You may have red bumps that look like “chicken skin.” This will go away in a few hours, depending on your skin type. Contrary to popular belief, hair does not all grow in at the same time. Therefore, you may have some hair that is too short for the wax to grab, even though you waited the recommended 1½ to 2 weeks. You may see some strays after your first couple of waxes and we will do our best to tweeze them, within reason. Our first priority as estheticians is to your skin's health. We will not go over a spot multiple times and risk damaging the skin. If you have never been waxed before and you are waxing for a special occasion, we recommend a “trial run” at least 5 to 6 weeks prior to your event with a follow-up wax directly before the event. Over time, you will realize the full benefit of waxing and, as you wax consistently and slow the hair growth, you will be able to remain silky smooth for several weeks.

Hair should be ¼ inch long.

For most people this is 1½ to 2 weeks worth of growth. If hair is too short, it cannot be waxed. We DO NOT trim hair. If hair is extremely long, you may want to trim it. Keep in mind if you trim it too short, we cannot wax it.

Do not come in to get waxed if your skin has a sunburn, rash or any other type of irritation.

Waxing will only irritate the area more and can lead to further problems.

If you are using Accutane, YOU CANNOT WAX.

You must also wait at least 6 months once you have stopped taking Accutane before you can be waxed.

Do not drink caffeine directly before waxing.

If you are using Retin-A or any form of retinol, use any type of glycolic or other “acid” face wash or have had a chemical peel in the last 3 weeks:

Please stop use 3 to 4 days prior to your wax and let your esthetician know so proper precautions can be made.

Taking an Advil (ibuprofen) 30 to 40 minutes before waxing will help minimize the discomfort and help reduce any redness or swelling following a wax.

Lightly exfoliating the day of your wax will help you get the best possible results.

For bikini area waxes, it is best not to schedule if you are on your cycle.

However, if you must schedule during your cycle please let your esthetician know so they may take the necessary precautions. Please wear a fresh tampon or a diva cup and be aware the area may be more sensitive.

Waxing is very tolerable but there will always be some small discomfort involved.

People who advertise painless waxing... well, it just doesn’t exist! However, our waxing is fast, professional and as pain-free as possible. The quicker your service is over, the faster the pain is over.

Post Wax Care

Post Wax Care

No hot showers, hot tubs, exercise, tanning, swimming, fragrant soaps or lotions immediately after waxing.

All of these can add sensitivity to skin that has already been sensitized. Usually, waiting 24 hours after a wax will prevent any irritation.

Do not exfoliate until a couple of days after you get waxed.

Waiting to exfoliate will help prevent irritation.

If red bumps persist more than a few hours, hydrocortisone cream can be applied to help calm the skin.

To avoid ingrown hairs, you must exfoliate the skin daily after the allotted wait time of 48 hours.

Use our scrubbing mitts or a loofah for exfoliating. Avoid mesh body sponges as they tend to harbor bacteria.

If ingrown hairs persist, talk to your esthetician.

They can help you find a product to use and help you understand what may be causing the irritation.

Most people tolerate waxing extremely well and continue waxing for years.

However, there are exceptions to every rule. If you happen to have what you think is a negative reaction to the waxing service, please contact your esthetician immediately at info@heygorgeousaustin.comWe are experienced in understanding skin reactions and can guide you on how to address it as well as on what may have caused it.
