What should I expect after my first wax?

After your first wax the area will be red and slightly sensitive. You may have red bumps that look like “chicken skin.” This will go away in a few hours, depending on your skin type. Contrary to popular belief, hair does not all grow in at the same time. Therefore, you may have some hair that is too short for the wax to grab - even though you waited the recommended 1½ to 2 weeks. You may see some strays after your first couple of waxes and we will do our best to tweeze them (within reason). Our first priority as estheticians is to your skin. We will not go over a spot multiple times and risk damaging the skin. If you have never been waxed before and you are waxing for a special occasion, we recommend a “trial run” at least 5 to 6 weeks prior to your event with a follow-up wax directly before. Over time, you will realize the full benefit of waxing and as you wax consistently and slow the hair growth, you will be able to remain silky smooth for several weeks.

Why is waxing better than shaving?

When you wax you are actually removing the hair from the follicle. This results in the hair growing in slower. With shaving, you are merely cutting the hair mid shaft and this is why you have to shave every 2 to 3 days. With shaving, the hair will also appear darker and thicker when it grows back. Although the hair has actually become neither of those things, it is an optical illusion created when you cut the hair mid shaft. With waxing, since the hair is completely removed, it does not appear darker or thicker as it grows in. Shaving with a razor can also cause tiny cuts to the skin and leave it open for bacteria. This can lead to unsightly ingrown hairs. Waxing is a sanitary method of hair removal that doesn’t break the skin. Over time, waxing can also thin the amount of hair that grows back and the hair itself, making it less noticeable as it grows in. As with anything, there are exceptions to every rule but we have waxed thousands of clients over the years and have seen many of them marvel at how much smoother their skin is and how much thinner their hair has become.

How often should I wax?

Body waxing: every 4-5 weeks.
Face waxing: varies per person but typically every 2-4 weeks.

Is it okay to shave between appointments?

Are there any topicals or medications I should avoid before waxing?

Please do not use Retin-A, Renova or AHA's. We cannot wax you if you are on Accutane or have used it in the past 6 months.

Can I tan before I get waxed?

Please do not tan 2 days before waxing or 2 days after waxing - including spray tanning. We will not be able to wax you if you have any sort of sunburn.

Can I get any sort of facial waxing and a facial or peel at the same time?

We prefer not to do any facial waxing at the time of your facial. You will not get the full benefits of the facial because we would be limited in the products we could use on you and you will be more sensitive in general after a wax.

We will never do any facial waxing and follow it with a peel.

Why shouldn’t I do a chemical peel in the summer?

Chemical peels are an excellent way to treat acne, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and a slew of other skin issues. Chemical peels work by using acids or enzymes to help remove dead unwanted cells - thus allowing healthier cells to rise to the surface. During the summer months, especially here in Austin, our skin is exposed to extreme heat and sun. Due to the post peel sensitivity of the skin, these elements can cause the opposite reaction we are hoping for and should be avoided. Therefore, we at Hey Gorgeous recommend the safer approach of using this treatment only during our cooler months.

Can I get a facial or peel if I have a sunburn?

We prefer not to perform any skin care services when you have a sunburn.

Can I get any sort of facial waxing and a facial or peel at the same time?

We prefer not to do any facial waxing at the time of your facial. You will not get the full benefits of the facial because we would be limited in the products we could use on you and you will be more sensitive in general after a wax.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are individual semi-permanent lashes. They are attached to your eyelashes individually, not to your skin. This service is a very meticulous one that requires skill, precision, and practice. Hey Gorgeous offers two different lash options: classic and volume.

Will extensions damage my natural lashes?

No. When done properly, extensions don’t cause damage or premature fallout to your natural lashes. They will only shed out according to the normal growth cycle of the natural lashes.

How long will lash extensions last?

Each individual is different. Our natural lashes are shedding daily (much like the hair on our head). So the extension attached to its natural lash sheds with its natural shedding cycle. A typical full lash shedding cycle is somewhere between 21-90 days. Clients should be coming in every 2-4 weeks for fills to maintain the fullness of their lash extensions. If you have a full set put on, and don’t maintain them, they will shed with your natural shedding cycle.

Who wears eyelash extensions?

Women (and occasionally men) of all ages! They’re great for young women preparing for special events, busy moms, professional women, women who don’t like to wear makeup every day, women who want to cut down on their “getting ready” routine, women who are sick of smearing and clumping mascara, and women who are sick of eyelash curlers or putting on strip lashes. Extensions are suitable for women with short, sparse natural lashes, and also women who have long full natural lashes.

Can I wear mascara with my eyelash extensions?

You can wear mascara but keep in mind it cannot be waterproof - doing so will only weaken the bond adhesive, causing your eyelashes to fall out faster. If you choose to wear mascara we recommend you use one formulated for extensions.

Can I still use lash growth serums or lash medications with my extensions?

Definitely! After the initial 24-48 hour setting period following your lash appointment, growth serums are even RECOMMENDED for continued lash health.

Can I get eyelash extensions if my lashes are tinted or dyed?

Yes, it is safe to receive eyelash extensions on tinted or dyed lashes. However, it is not recommended to tint, dye, or perm lashes after having the lash extensions applied on the same day. Do not perm lashes before service.

Why Microblading?

Microblading is not done with a tattoo gun. This procedure is performed using a handheld tool designed specifically for this treatment which leaves you with the most natural looking brow. Because microblading is a semi-permanent treatment, it allows us to change the brow shape as needed when we age - unlike permanent tattoos.

Does it hurt?

While there is some discomfort involved, most clients tolerate the procedure quite well. A Lidocaine based numbing gel will be applied to the area prior to the treatment.

How long does it last?

The average length of time is 18 months, but everyone’s skin type is different so there is no guarantee as to how long it will last on you. Following the correct after care and home care procedures will aid in extending the results.

Do I need a consultation?

Yes, we require a consultation for all initial microblading sessions. This allows the esthetician to discuss your goals and verify that you are a candidate for the procedure.

How long does it take?

You must have a consultation prior to your session which lasts approximately 20-30 minutes. After your consultation we will schedule your actual service. A full microblading takes 2-3 hours. A partial microblading takes 1-2 hours. This is not a procedure to be rushed!

What if I’m allergic?

While allergic reactions are rare, we can do a pigment test for those with high skin sensitivities or those sensitive to hair dye, certain metals, or certain makeup products. This patch test can be done at your consultation and should take place a week prior to treatment.

Is it safe?

Yes. All of our pigments used are FDA approved. All of the tools used are single-use and disposed of after your session. Our estheticians practice the highest standard of sanitation and always maintain a clean working area.

Will I still need brow waxes?

Yes. Microblading does not affect the hair growth one way or another. Because of this, you will still need to shape your brow as normal. However, waxing cannot be performed a week prior to microblading or for 4 weeks after microblading.

What is the recovery time?

There really is no down time. You will be a bit red after your session but it usually dissipates quickly. You will need to use an ointment in the area after your treatment. Provided you follow the after care procedures that your esthetician gives you, you should be completely healed in around 7 days.

Do I really need the perfection session?

Yes. Microblading is a two step process. Because we do not penetrate below the epidermis, the brow will fade a bit after the initial treatment. The perfection session is used to make adjustments to the shape and color as needed.

What if I don’t like it?

As with all cosmetic procedures, we recommend you research and make sure microblading is the right treatment for you. Our estheticians will do their best to ensure that you leave with the most gorgeous of brows. This is why the perfection session is so important! Pigment and color can be corrected at this session. Because microblading is semi-permanent, brows will also eventually fade away if no additional touch ups are done.
